The only things available were items you can buy in a hardware store.I packed up the unit and sent it backI've been pretty disappointed with the quality of this jointer so far. I had to file a couple burrs off the top of the fence that were scoring wood. Came with some dents on the base too. The depth of cut gauge is a joke (pretty much just a sticker applied to the side of the infeed table) and mine isn't even square with the table or pointer. The fence is kind of a pain to adjust but I'll probably never adjust it from 90 degres. The support bracket for the fence does stick out a considerable distance behind the unit which reduces the portability and makes it awkward to carry (and there are no handles for this). I work a lot with it outside or in the garage and portability is a must for any item with cast iron tables. I don't knock it for it, but I left it out in the garage one night in the middle of a project and got a little bit of rust on the surface and I apply paste wax before every use. It also did not come adjusted. The knives were a hair too low and resulted in jamming against the outfeed table a couple times until I raised them (but just the smallest amount). I use it within what it's designed to do, mostly for shelves and smaller projects. The table is about 2.5' long but it's a benchtop jointer. All in all, it works fine, but the quality is lacking. It will go on sale for These blades are designed to be replaced regularly so the screws should NOT strip!! Furthermore, Delta does not have any local certified repair shops. In fact, the machine shop that they referred me, told me that they refuse to work on any Delta products and haven't serviced them in years because they don't like working with the company. They may or may not cover the costs of fixing the problem and all shipping costs are my responsibility when all I need is for someone to remove the damaged screws.

There is a reason that the major hardware stores no longer carry this product on their shelves and refuse to service Delta's products!!! Avoid this product!!Actually cast iron fence and tables It is fairly accurate. It is not a powermatic tool so don't expect perfection, but it is quite close. The blades were within. 002 measured with a dial indicator of parallel with the out feed table out of the box. The infeed table is co planer with the out feed at.005 thousandths on both front and back, the far side of the infeed is not co planer at all. It was.012 at the back and.024 at the front. This is definitely a pain to adjust. I will be working on it later this weekend. The fence was close to 90 degrees but did require a simple adjustment. The dust chute arrived broken. The box was undamaged externally but thr styrofoam was destroyed inside. IMPORTANT NOTE!!!! Manual states use 4 M8 x 25 mm socket head cap screws in fence. Do use the (2) 25mm screws in the dove tail assembly and the (4) 16mm screws in thr fence. Throw the lock washers away. Use blue loctite. Lockwashers are a installed stress riser and create a problem that doesn't exist. Use flat washers and loctite. If you can find a lockwasher on a airplane or a formula one car feel free to use split ring lockwashers. Its a pet peeve. Overall a decent machine. I bought and returned two shopfox jointers. They are ragged pieces of junk. Do not even consider a shopfox tool.Setup was straightforward, though I agree with comments that the manual could be better written. Bed was flat to straightedge check. Fence design doesn't make it simple to get a true 90 deg. setting. My Wixey digital angle gauge helped a lot here. Check the bed first to ensure it's on a level surface, then set the fence at 90 degrees and lock it down. The weight of this unit really helps with stability. Ran a piece of pine first, then about 60 feet of walnut on surface and edge. No problems.

In 1923 he started manufacturing a small scrollsaw based on a design licensed from its inventor, Carl Moberg. Beginning in 1929, Tautz started identifying Delta Specialty Co.The Delta name was difficult to trademark in other jurisdictions so the Tauco name was used instead. We are uncertain of the ownership of Tauco and it is possible that it existed before the 1939 Marshall Field buyout. About the same time Rockwell also purchased Crescent Machine Co. Delta Manufacturing became Rockwell's Delta Power Tool Division. Shortly thereafter, Delta tools were labeled Delta Rockwell. It appears that the saws and their motors were manufactured for Rockwell by A. O. Smith Corp., which had already been making motors for Rockwell, and possibly for Delta before the purchase by Rockwell. The former Callander Foundry continued to operated as Rockwell International of Canada, Ltd. In 1981, the line of handheld power tools was sold to Pentair Inc. of St. Paul, MN, which operated it as the Porter-Cable line—a name that had disappeared shortly after Rockwell bought the Porter-Cable Machine Co. Pentair operated it as the Delta International Machinery Corp., which included the Canadian operations. Also beginning in the early 1990s, Lindquist Machine corp.In 1995, Delta bought rip-fence maker Biesemeyer Manufacturing Corp.

In the late 1990s, Pentair merged Delta's and Porter-Cable's manufacturing operations in Jackson, Tennessee. In 2000, the two divisions were formally merged. The new company is Delta Power Equipment Corp. The CEO has said that the Delta products currently manufactured in the United States will continue to be made there. Keith's history article also provides information on specific product: when they were introduced, and how they changed over the years. Paint colors, how to rebuild a scrollsaw air pump, a type study of Delta cast-iron stands, information specific to bandsaw, lathes, Unisaws, and more. Check the Delta website first; some manuals are available there for free download. Be sure to have either a model number or serial number handy. There is a small fee for manuals sent by mail. Well, there isn't much information past the mid-1980s but Delta can provide information on those more recent machines. Some of these facts are in dispute. This assertion is contradicted by the evidence above. Please contact us if you can provide more solid evidence one way or the other. VintageMachinery.org does not provide support or parts for any machinesPlease remember that safety standards haveIt is up to the individual user to useThe VintageMachinery.org. You can use a multimeter to test tool and appliance cords and switches, the two parts usually responsible for electri. It also describes information tools available at eReplacementParts.com. And the company was sold a while ago, so you might be seeing a few more of the parts for their machinery being discontinued. You might try to keep searching on line for the 1340166 lock lever. There were a lot of these jointers sold, so I would hope someone might still have this part for you. Good luck, -WJA Delta makes a knife setting tool part number 37-157 which makes it very simple to do.

You loosen the knife screws on the cutter-head, remove the old knife, insert the new knife in the cutter-head, place the setting tool on the outfeed table and over the cutter-head with the new knife in it, tighten up the cutter-head screws and your done. The setting tool uses magnets to hold onto the table and bring the knives up to the correct height. A jointer requires fewer adjustments than a tablesaw—just three or four, depending on the design of your machine. But they?re critical if you want to mill stock that?s perfectly straight and square. In place of the hand plane?s sole, jointers have a pair of tables that support the stock as you pass it over a rapidly turning cutterhead.

Machined dovetail ways align and guide the tables. You can fine-tune their alignment and lock them in place with accessible gib screws. As shown below, the knives of a typical cutterhead are tightly wedged in place with gibs and gib bolts.Tables that sag at one end or the other (or both) will cause concave cuts. Tables that are high at their outer ends will produce convex cuts. And an outfeed table that?s parallel with the infeed table, but lower than the knives, will result in a condition called “snipe”—a small, hollow cut found at the end of a workpiece. This occurs when the infeed table no longer supports the workpiece. Now, lay a level or straightedge across both tables as shown opposite page, top. If any light shows under the straightedge at the outer end of either table, the table is sagging. Usually you can correct this by tightening the upper gib screw (see drawing below ).Loosening the gib screws lowers them. If you see a gap at the top, one or both tables are sagging at their outer ends. If there?s a gap at the bottom, one or both table ends are too high. This happens because the dovetail ways have worn over the years and must be shimmed to compensate for the accumulated wear. To measure how much shimming is needed, loosen the lower gib screws, lift up on the outboard end of the table, and insert a feeler gauge 1 ? 2. Release the table, snug the gib-adjustment screws, and check to see if the table is parallel with the other one. After you?ve found the right thickness of shims, cut 1 ? 2. Finally, lock down the gib-adjustment screws and make a final check. That?s why we like to precisely set the fence at the beginning of each work session. Simply loosen the bevel lock, position the triangle as shown below, move the fence until you see no gaps at the table or fence, and retighten the lock. But guess what? All the machines still produced straight, smooth edges. If you want to spend the better part of a Saturday at it, you can get them closer—but we?

d rather spend that time building projects. But few jointers have cutterheads that are perfectly parallel with the tables, which means the cutterhead knives won?t be parallel with the tables either. Which you choose depends partly on the type of cutterhead your machine has. It uses a simple wooden stick and a sheet of window glass. The stick should measure about 3 ? 4 To prevent cutting your hand, order polished edges. Check the alignment by setting a triangle against the fence and touching the knife. Immobilize the cutterhead by inserting tapered wood shims between the head and bearings, as shown below. Loosen the knife gib bolts just enough so that the knife moves with firm hand pressure. Raise the knife slightly higher than the top of the outfeed table. Now, lay the glass on the outfeed table, extended to fully contact the knife. Press the glass to the table and slowly snug up the gib bolts, starting with ones at the ends and alternately working toward the middle.Too much torque can force a knife out of alignment. To limit the amount of pressure you can apply, turn the wrench with only your thumb and forefinger. Set each knife in turn, aligning it with the mark on the fence. Lay the stick on the outfeed table, lining up any one of the three table edge marks, and rotate each knife past it. All should move the stick the same distance at both ends. It consists of two steel or plastic bars that slide along a pair of parallel rods. As shown below, each bar has small but powerful magnets that hold the jig to the table and the knives. This keeps each knife flush with the outfeed table while you tighten the gib bolts. Of course the Magna-Set won?t work with an aluminum outfeed table. These gauges work especially well with knives that you adjust with jack-screws that elevate the knives.Reinstall the cutterhead guard, and plug in the machine.

This jointer is not for serious woodworking. The out of the box setup took less than 15 minutes, including calibration. (Patience my friends, and read the instructions.) I have run nothing but red oak through this machine for nearly two months now. Each and every board came out perfect. No need to use brute force. A gentle touch will do it. To date I have built a complete bed frame, headboard and foot board and two night stands. I have also completed a coffee table and end table. Again, completely of red oak. The longest pieces I have run through the machine have been 6', with little or no effort. I have not had to re-calibrate the machine since taking it out of the box. And I am constantly changing the depth of cut and bevel. Now for the RUH ROH.I finally had to change the blades. Unfortunately, as with some other reviewers, the screws were frozen. I did end up rounding off 3 of the screws, and ended up using a screw extractor to remove them. Replacement screws were easy to come by. So there you have it. I am VERY happy with this machine and would recommend it to any beginner to intermediate woodworker for doing small projects.

Reviewed in the United States on March 22, 2008 It's small and it's cheap, which is great if you like small cheap things. That said, it works pretty well for a small, two-knife jointer - and has more power than I expected. The tables are too short to make this jointer useful for much more than box-making or similar small projects. But if you are in the market for a small jointer for that purpose, I'd say it's not too bad. Please try again later. From the United StatesFor example, this Delta has an aluminum fence and aluminum table. After years of moderate use the table cracked in several places. If going outside these rough parameters it bogged down. There just are not enough amps to spin the blade assembly smoothly against the friction a wider or harder board adds. You will also have to buy or make a dust catcher for the Delta or let the stuff fly all over your shop. After many years I've sold this Delta and bought the Shop Fox which has more Amps, both a cast iron table and fence, and a dust collector. Remember benchtop jointers are different even if they look alike (e.g. the Grizzly looking like the Shop Fox - they are different for reasons other than the paint job). After checking them all carefully the Shop Fox is the best. Please try again later. Please try again later. The Bird Man 5.0 out of 5 stars This unit is in Delta's ShopMaster line of product. The same product, but I believe an earlier model, is the 37-070R which is a reconditioned unit. Same unit, but the reconditioned unit will be a bit cheaper and reconditioned units will only come with a 1yr warranty instead of 2yrs. I have read dozens of reviews on this machine. Though most of them were positive, some would not recommend this machine for reasons of bad customer service from Delta, in-feed and out-feed tables not level, and fence problems. Delta Customer Service was extremely good.

A yellow sheet of paper comes with all Delta products saying if you have questions or concerns DO NOT contact who you purchased it from, but call Delta at 800-223-7278. They are going to ship me the plastic shoe and I should get it in the next couple days. The gal I talked to at Delta said a service technician would call me back right away on my other problem. It took four minutes for a call back. This took about 5 minutes. Using pieces of aluminum foil for shims under the in-feed table on one side to get it square with the fence was very simple to do. I was able to square the fence in about 15 minutes. You don't want to adjust the out-feed table as it is much harder to deal with. This unit cuts perfectly and is intended for small (less then 3' in my opinion) lengths of material. If you need to work with longer lengths of material then buy a full size jointer. Though if you supported the weight of your material using roller stands on both sides of the jointer I would guess you will get some good results. Another tip I use is to put a few drops of dry lube (a wet lube will work also but wet lubes attract dust) between the fence slide bracket and the fence bracket so when you need to adjust the fence it moves easily. When you have aluminum trying to slide on aluminum it tends to bind a little. I'm not sure if Delta would recommend this, but it works well for me. Thanks Delta! The Bird Man Professional Woodworker Franktown, COPlease try again later. Please try again later. William Highfield 5.0 out of 5 stars Here's the surprise - very little tinkering needed. It actually is a well designed and powerful machine, and a value at the price. The fence that shipped is extruded aluminum, solid enough and very easy to adjust. I have had no difficulties getting it to stay at the desired angles. I use a Swanson speed square for right angles and a sliding t-bevel for the odd angle. It stays in place and is strong enough for the milling of cabinet members.

It is true that the lock handles are plastic. I expect them to break some day when I'm in a hurry. The issue of the dust port was easily solved. I cut a cover plate for the rectangular opening out of transparant plastic (so that I can see if shavings are accumulating). I popped the round plugs out and put the nozzle of my wall-mount dust collector in one of the holes. The shavings are evacuated very well now. The noise level is acceptably low. I wish they had carbide knife blade replacements. The high speed steel blades mar too easily for my taste. Last note: This is a small portable jointer and not really what you want for, say, planing doors or large lumber. But for the type of work I do it is a joy. I am a residential remodeler who builds custom cabinetry and built-ins.Please try again later. Please try again later. William Lattanzio 4.0 out of 5 stars The set up was fairly easy except for squaring the fence which took a little while. The table was pretty good right out of the box. I've used it to face and edge joint some smaller stock to make drawers and and small table top and it worked great. I keep it on the edge of my bench with a trashcan positioned to capture the chips. My jointer was missing the push blocks out of the box; I contacted customer service and new blocks were sent out immediately. My biggest complaint would be the fence as it is only passable. Another reviewer mentioned making a new fence from MDF and I think that it's a great idea only I would veneer melamine or hardboard to the MDF. Even if I had paid full price I would feel satisfied with my purchase. Please try again later. Please try again later. Robert Potter 4.0 out of 5 stars I called Delta customer service, and they told me that they didn't recommend my installing replacement tables myself, and that they were back ordered anyway. They suggested I return it to my local supplier, which I did the next day. My supplier sent it to the Delta factory service center across town.

Three and a half weeks later, I still did not have a jointer. It turns out that the Delta factory service center couldn't get the replacement tables either. My supplier brought in a complete replacement jointer for me, and we opened the box and checked the tables with a square. I agree with the other reviewers. The fence adjustment mechanism is laughable. It makes setting the fence to any angle at all VERY difficult, but with about 20 minutes of work I got it set to 90 degrees - where I plan to leave it. Once past these little tribulations, the results the jointer produces are excellent. Please try again later. Please try again later. Fred Gwynn 2.0 out of 5 stars Well, I am not a negative reviewer, but I returned the machine and got a Ridgid JP0610 from HD. The Delta machine I received was just as described in the reviews on this page, so before purchasing this jointer determine what are your needs. Small projects (boards Please try again later. Please try again later. Allen B. 3.0 out of 5 stars Despite it's small size, it does seem to have a lot of power -- it has no problem with oak and walnut. Keep in mind that this is a small machine, so if you want to get good results, you won't want to use it on stock that is much longer than 3 feet or wider than 4 inches. The biggest complaint most people have is with the flimsy fence. I would have to agree that this is the weakest point of the jointer. I have had the JT160 for over three years now and it still performs well. Although, here's why I can only give it a 3 star rating: I ran into a small problem when replacing the blades. I did manage to get 6 of the 8 screws out, but two remained unmovable (The Allen wrench now has a 90 degree twist in it from the force applied to the two screws.) After a couple hours of unproductive aggrevation, I resorted to an air wrench which finally stripped the heads of the screws. At this point, I decided to just replace the whole cutter head.

I will admit that the jointer came dangerously close to being thrown away. Please try again later. Please try again later. Shawn E. Decker 4.0 out of 5 stars Small outfeed table, shaky fence and with only 2 blades you can't possibly expect a 5 star review when looking for a top end shop tool. Still though Delta, for me, as a weekend warrior makes the tools right for me. Don't expect high production rates out of the budget line tools and you won't be disappointed. I'm always amazed when I read comments from ppl trying to catch lightening in a bottle and when they don't they decide to slam a product they bought that they didn't HAVE to but chose to. Love my jointer. Love the price I paid. Please try again later. Please try again later. Amazon Customer 1.0 out of 5 stars I decided to take a gamble and buy one, but it was a mistake. I discovered that both of the tables were warped. I was able to get two new tables sent to my house under warranty. I found that they were also warped, just not as bad. I should note that none of the boxes or parts showed any signs of damage. All four feed tables show uninterrupted machine marks on them. In addition to Delta not being able to create flat surfaces, I also found that the surfaces are very rough. They should have used a finer finish for less friction against boards. I have found that I cannot get a flat surface or edge on any board. This purchase was a waste of my money and is completely frustrating since I am back to using the router to edge boards and the hand planes for flattening. I have really been disappointed with Delta's lack of quality control on their products. Since this bad purchase, my Delta table saw motor burned up. Needless to say, I am shopping for another brand to replace these cheap products. Please try again later. Please try again later. MaryMoon 4.0 out of 5 stars However, with my limited space and budget, I didn't have much of a choice. I went ahead and bought it and I have been pleasantly surprised.

In 1981, the line of handheld power tools was sold to Pentair Inc. of St.

There's always a new table saw with innovative features, a redesigned compound miter saw with greater capacity and more accuracy than last year's, or a planer that delivers a flatter, smoother surface than ever before. But after all the hype has settled to the showroom floor, you'll find one machine sitting quietly in the corner, doing the same job it has for decades, with little change or help from the marketing team. The tool, of course, is a drill press, and if you don't have one, it's time to look at the reasons why you should. Most portable drills these days have variable-speed, reversible motors and are designed for driving threaded fasteners as much as boring holes. And, while corded versions do have serious power, they don't approach the torque available in a drill press. On the other hand, except for occasional stints with a sanding drum, a drill press is exclusively designed for making holes. And, it handles this job with a level of repeatable accuracy and control that's impossible to maintain with a portable tool. While the floor models have greater capacity, most home shops will find a benchtop press completely adequate—plus it's compact so it can be moved out of the way when necessary. Best of all, the benchtop versions are easily affordable. Prices will vary. 2. Dimension shown is twice the distance from bit center to support column. 3. As indicated on drill press. 4. Maximum quill travel (and hole depth). 5. Distance from the chuck to the table at its lowest point. 6. Runout measured at test shaft mounted in chuck. Runout at machine spindle (without chuck) is nil on all machines. DRILL PRESS FEATURES Drill presses are designated by the maximum-diameter workpiece, in inches, that can be centered under the bit. To understand how much a drill press can handle, divide this number in half to get the throat depth, or distance from the bit to the support column at the back of the machine.

This dimension indicates how far you can place a hole from the edge of your work. In most cases, this provides five speeds, although our Ryobi press has 12. The Delta DP350 has continuously variable speed, achieved mechanically through variable pulleys. Chucks are mounted on tapered spindles—a tap with a mallet keeps the chuck in place and the tapered fit guarantees accuracy. We measured runout (lateral deviation as the spindle is turned) on the spindle and on a machined test shaft mounted in the chuck, and found all our machines well within acceptable tolerances. Quill travel determines the maximum hole depth. All of our units have a depth stop so that you can bore holes or counterbores to a uniform depth. Some machines have a quill lock that allows you to lock the spindle at any position within its range. Our larger Delta machine has T channels instead of slots, providing a place for lubricant to collect when working with metal. The slotted tables are handier for woodworkers because they make it easier to attach a large wooden table to better support bigger work. This feature also allows the tables to be accurately squared with the bit. However, we found that most tables were slightly out of square on a plane viewed from the side of the tool, where there is no adjustment. Most of our test machines have a crank-operated table lifting mechanism. The DP350 is at the top of the line and comes with several features that we think make it worth its price. Variable speed is accomplished through two split pulleys that open and close as the adjustment dial is turned while the machine is running. The system is quiet, free from vibration, and so easy to use, you won't hesitate to change speeds for one special hole as you might be tempted to do with the other units. The depth stop is a threaded rod with a quick-release nut for fast operation. As for the table, its T channels make it a bit trickier to bolt on a vise or panel.

And, woodworkers might find the channels annoying to clean. Delta also offers another 12-in.Both models come with an adjustable lamp that keeps the work area well lit. The access cover that you'll need to remove to do the job is held in place with small screws that are easy to lose. And, while Delta provides a speed chart offering appropriate speeds for various bits and materials, the speed dial on our machine indicated only the lowest and highest speeds. The Craftsman machine has the tallest column—giving it the greatest capacity between the chuck and the table. And there's no provision for locking the quill. Loosening belt tension to change speeds was more difficult than with most. We found it to be a very smooth-running tool, and we rank it high for fit and finish. The 9.4-amp motor has more than ample power, and the spring-loaded motor mount makes it easy to slack off belt tension when changing speeds. This mechanism is quickly set by zeroing the scale while the quill is held at the desired depth. The table angle is locked by a relatively large and accessible bolt. However, the table was further out of square than our other machines when measured on the side plane of the tool. To bore perfectly square, deep holes, shimming the table where it joins its column support casting is necessary. Woodtek tools are available from Woodworker's Supply, 1108 N. Glenn Rd., Casper, WY 82601; www.woodworker.com. A radial drill press has a fixed table and a drilling head that pivots so your work can stay on a level surface while you bore angled holes. In fact, the only medium-duty model we found available is this one sold by Grizzly Industrial. But, the most amazing specification is the throat dimension. With the drilling head fully extended, the distance from the bit center to the support column is 17 in.—the equivalent of a 34-in.

DP200, with its standard 5-speed stepped-pulley transmission, is comparable to the Woodtek unit in capacity, but has a few extra creature comforts that may make it worth its slightly higher price. Like the DP350, it has a lamp that can be adjusted to suit the job at hand, but it doesn't have a quill lock. Unlike the similar Woodtek, this tool has a crank mechanism for adjusting table height. Although adjusting table angle wasn't as easy as it was with the Woodtek tool, the Delta table was just about perfectly square when measured on the side plane. This is a nicely detailed unit that would serve any shop for light-duty work. However, with its 3.2-amp motor, large holes need to be approached with patience. Speed changing, though, can be a chore as the transmission uses two belts and a third stepped idler pulley. The design makes it easy to slacken the belts, but some speed changes require belt removal. All in all, we'd opt for the five speeds found on most other units. The dial-type depth gauge is similar to that on the Woodtek, and it is equally easy to adjust and set. Most of all, the tool suffers from poor attention to detail. The castings, in particular, are of lower quality than most of the other machines in our group. Ryobi tools are available at The Home Depot, www.homedepot.com. It has the features, power and capacity to handle a wide range of jobs—plus its variable-pulley transmission makes it easy to adjust the speed quickly. Of course we'd rather have a slotted table, but it's a small inconvenience considering the overall quality of the tool. It's a less industrial tool than the Delta and lacks the bells and whistles, but it has decent capacity and no glaring problems. At the 10-in. size, we find both the Woodtek and Delta DP200 running neck and neck. The Delta has the edge for features, and fit and finish, while the Woodtek comes way ahead in terms of power.

However, we'd forgo this wide selection for a smoother-running unit with a bit more attention to detail. You may be able to find more information about this and similar content at piano.io. This is no light weight china tool.A nice bidding opportunity for you only!! I am offering my delta dp350 drill press for auc. Press gently with fingertips to ensure good contact with teeth. To start viewing messages,However, upon opening the housing I think this belt is not a 'V' belt. It has teeth in it. Part of me thinks the twist belts will work fine, but part of me also thinks that it will not work. As I change speed the assembly appears to change the length of the belt. I think it is just an illusion. One side increases in diameter while the other decreases. Does anyone have a machine with a similar assembly that has installed these power twist belts.? I referred to my manual, but they do not even tell you how to change the belt let alone if this twist belt will work. Thanx, shotgunn The length of the belt does not change, the diameters of the pulleys do. To change the belt, take the top of the rear pulley off. Do it with the DP set for the highest speed. Remove the C clip on the top of the shaft. Be careful, the spring is under tension. Take the top of the pulley off, change the belt. Now you have to replace the pulley half. Put the spring in a vise and squeeze it closed. Use a couple wire zip ties to keep it compressed. After you get it all put back together, cut the ties.

The tool rests fasten to the unit with conventional bolts, and the unit comes with a small wrench for these bolts that stores on the unit. At some point I'll probably pick up some wing knobs and change out the bolts for a tool-less change feature. May 2009 UPDATE After a couple of years (where does the time go?) using this grinder, I thought I'd add a couple of comments. I have since built a stand for the grinder and did bolt the unit to the top of that (wood) stand. This didn't do much to reduce vibration, so I purchased a wheel balancing kit from Oneway. This kit definitely helped smooth out the vibrations, but certainly didn't eliminate them. I also have done away with the stock tool rests in favor of some after market products. The rests that come with these units are really the least that the manufacturers (not just Delta) can get away with--functional, but barely. I'm still very happy with the grinder, still getting lots of use out of it. I've been fighting vibrations and wheel run-out problems ever since. I think I have it narrowed down to the inner flanges which are some very low quality stamped washers. The parts breakdown lists the same part number for both the outer and inner flanges. Contacting Delta support has been impossible so far.will keep trying. Please try again later. From the United StatesReturned grinder and received a new unit. The new grinder did the same thing overheated to point of smoke emitting from from motor housing. Returned it a second time, the third unit ran slightly less hot and seller said that was standard for this product. I'm now six months past the warranty and the unit just went up in smoke and flames. This unit was only used three to four times per year. Just plain junk don't waste your time or money!!!!Please try again later. Please try again later. Jedijfo 2.0 out of 5 stars When the shields are installed (A NECESSITY), they vibrate very badly, making a loud noise. The shields are not secured well enough to the grinder.

I need the part number I you have a multimeter test the two following items, circuit board assembly, and sensor. They are both a little expensive to replace but depending on the cost of the grinder it might be worth it. Hope this helps, WJA. I do a lot of turning and use the grinder many times during any given turning session. I've also used it to touch up our kitchen knives and to make a striking knife. The unit comes with a 36 grit and 60 grit wheel. The 36 grit is for serious reshaping and probably won't see that much use in my shop (though I did use it for the striking knife). The quick change feature on the wheels makes change-outs a breeze. My only complaint (and the reason for 4 and not 5 stars) is the wheels themselves. To Delta's credit, they immediatly sent me a replacement wheel when I called the customer service line. Even the Norton wheel I bought seems slightly out of true. Grinding wheels are cast, and apparently the quality control division industry-wide hasn't figured out how to keep them perfectly flat. The GR450 comes with two holes in the base for fastening the unit to a bench top or grinder stand. I haven't done this yet, and I don't think it's essential, but I do think it would maximize the unit's performance. One other comment.

This versatile grinder not only takes care of the toughest grinding jobs, but it also handles buffing and sharpening duties with ease. Its cast-iron construction ensures minimal vibration while operating, and the built-in eye shields and spark deflectors ensure safe operation each and every time. DELTA also includes a gooseneck lamp to help get a clear view of the workpiece and grinding wheels. Variable speed so I could use it for both sharpening and general grinding by just changing the wheels, built-in light, decent tool rests.

But then, about a year after I bought it, after relatively gentle use, I turned it on, a puff of smoke and some sparks came out of the control module. As all know, when they manufacture things that run on electricity, they install the smoke during manufacture. Something else that I didn't like: Mounting a wire wheel on this grinder was a pain. The flanges don't work well with a wire wheel. Show full review Newsletter. Super high amount of views. 2 sold, 998 available. More Super high amount of views. 2 sold, 998 available. As with all machinery, there are certain hazards involved with the operation of the product. Using the machine with respect and caution will considerably lessen the possibility of personal injury. However, if normal safety precautions are overlooked or ignored, personal injury to the operator may result. Safety equipment such as guards, push sticks, hold-downs, featherboards, goggles, dust masks and hearing protection can reduce your potential for injury. But even the best guard won’t make up for poor judgment, carelessness or inattention. Always use common sense and exercise caution in the workshop. If a procedure feels dangerous, don’t try it. Figure out an alternative procedure that feels safer. REMEMBER: Your personal safety is your responsibility. If you have any questions relative to a particular application, DO NOT use the machine until you have first contacted Delta to determine if it can or should be performed on the product. Also use face or dust mask if cutting operation is dusty. These safety glasses must conform to ANSI Z87.1 requirements. NOTE: Approved glasses have Z87 printed or stamped on them. Keep work area well-lighted. Nonslip footwear is recommended. Wear protective hair covering to contain long hair. It’s safer than using your hand and frees both hands to operate tool. Follow instructions for lubricating and changing accessories. Always operate machinery in well ventilated areas and provide for proper dust removal. Use wood dust collection systems whenever possible. Some examples of these chemicals are. To reduce your exposure to these chemicals: work in a well ventilated area, and work with approved safety equipment, such as those dust masks that are specially designed to filter out microscopic particles. If there is any tendency for the stand or workbench to move during operation, the stand or workbench MUST be fastened to the floor. This is usually caused by sawdust in the kerf. Wedge open the kerf and back blade out of the workpiece. Only feed the material fast enough so that the blade will cut. A piece of moulding for example must lay flat on the table and not be permitted to rock while being cut. Replace missing, damaged or failed parts before resuming operation. Please also refer to the American National Standards Institute ANSI 01.1 Safety Requirements for Woodworking Machinery and the U.S. Department of Labor OSHA 1910.213 Regulations. If an extension cord is used, use only 3-wire extension cords which have 3- prong grounding type plugs and matching receptacle which will accept the machine’s plug. Before connecting the motor to the power line, make sure the switch is in the “OFF” position and be sure that the electric current is of the same characteristics as indicated on the machine. All line connections should make good contact. Running on low voltage will damage the motor.

Before connecting the machine to the power source, make sure the switch is in the “OFF” position. This machine is equipped with an electric cord having an equipment-grounding conductor and a grounding plug. The plug must be plugged into a matching outlet that is properly installed and grounded in accordance with all local codes and ordinances. The conductor with insulation having an outer surface that is green with or without yellow stripes is the equipmentgrounding conductor. If repair or replacement of the electric cord or plug is necessary, do not connect the equipment-grounding conductor to a live terminal. A, the machine will have a grounding plug that looks like the plug illustrated in Fig. A. A temporary adapter, which looks like the adapter illustrated in Fig. B, may be used to connect this plug to a matching 2-conductor receptacle as shown in Fig. B if a properly grounded outlet is not available. The temporary adapter should be used only until a properly grounded outlet can be installed by a qualified electrician. The green-colored rigid ear, lug, and the like, extending from the adapter must be connected to a permanent ground such as a properly grounded outlet box. Whenever the adapter is used, it must be held in place with a metal screw. Make sure your extension cord is in good condition and is a 3-wire extension cord which has a 3-prong grounding type plug and matching receptacle which will accept the machine’s plug. When using an extension cord, be sure to use one heavy enough to carry the current of the machine. An undersized cord will cause a drop in line voltage, resulting in loss of power and overheating. Fig. C, shows the correct gauge to use depending on the cord length. If in doubt, use the next heavier gauge. The smaller the gauge number, the heavier the cord. Remove the protective coating from all unpainted surfaces.

This coating may be removed with a soft cloth moistened with kerosene (do not use acetone, gasoline or lacquer thinner for this purpose). After cleaning, cover the unpainted surfaces with a good quality household floor paste wax. This will release the blade (C) from the upper chuck assembly (D). This will align wrench (H) with blade holder screw (J). Turn wrench (H) counter-clockwise. This will release the blade from the lower chuck assembly. Align the two holes in the table trunnions (O) with the two holes in the base (P) of the machine.Move table (A) to the horizontal position and lock table (A), by turning handle Leave some cushion in the four rubber feet (A) for absorbing noise and vibration. When the variable speed knob To increase the When the knob (B) is rotated all the way to the right (clockwise) the speed will be 1800 strokes per minute. Cut a slot into the blank and replace the standard insert (A) with the blank (B). The slot cut into the blank (B) will only be as wide as the blade giving maximum support to the bottom of the workpiece. This will release the blade (D) from the upper chuck (E). This will align wrench Turn wrench counterclockwise to loosen screw (J) Figs. 24 and 25, and remove blade from lower chuck. When the lever (A) is moved forward, as shown in Fig. 28, blade tension is released. NOTE: It is necessary to adjust the blade tension knob (B) only when the blade is removed from both upper and lower blade holders and a new or different type of blade is assembled to the holders. It is not necessary to adjust blade tension when the blade is removed and replaced in only the upper blade holder as in performing inside cutting operations. One method is to pull back on the blade tension lever (A) Fig. 28, the blade should start to have tension (resistance) when the blade tension lever is half way between open Fig. 28, and closed Fig. 27. Finer blades require more tensioning while thicker blades require less tension.

It should be noted, however, that very little adjustment is necessary and very little clamping force is required to hold the blade. Very little movement of locknut (C) is necessary. Then tighten screw (C). Screw (B) can be adjusted by loosening nut (C), thread screw (B) in or out the desired distance and tighten nut (C). Then tighten lock handle (B). With your scroll saw you should be able to cut a straight or curved line with ease. Most beginners will experience blade wandering; however, they eventually learn to control it as they become more familiar with the machine. Use scrap material to practice cuts before starting a project. This enables you to develop your own way of cutting and you will find out what you can and cannot do with your saw. Feed the workpiece only fast enough so that the blade will cut. Scroll saws cut faster across the grain than they do with the grain. Allow for this tendency when cutting patterns that shift rather quickly from with-the-grain cuts to cross-grain cuts. Release blade tension by moving tension lever (C) forward and loosen upper blade holder by moving lever (D) to the rear as shown. This will release the blade (E). Insert the blade (E) into the next hole in the pattern, as shown. Move tension lever (C) to the rear as shown and lower spring holddown (B). You are ready to make the next inside cut. Please read the manual and pay attention to these sections. Indicates an imminently hazardous situation which, if not avoided, will result in death or serious injury. Used without the safety alert symbol indicates potentially hazardous situation which, if not avoided, may result in property damage. SOME DUST CREATED BY POWER SANDING, SAWING, GRINDING, DRILLING, AND OTHER CONSTRUCTION ACTIVITIES contains chemicals known to cause cancer, birth defects or other reproductive harm.
